    Success.....
I thank you JRViejo for your help, the tutorials and your patience.
Evidently my problem was not clicking on "unused disk space". With a setting of 1 the program ran to completion in less than 20 minutes.
However that means there is a bug in the program that allows you to continue without the proper settings being entered. Without me setting the unused disk space I have no idea where the program went. But it sure caused a lot if problems.

Shankle, you're welcome; that's great news!

Regarding the bug in the program, remember that you are not using the latest version and perhaps that error was fixed in a newer release. PortableApps.com usually waits awhile before updating any of their portable programs thus the 5.82 version. If you feel adventurous, you might try Eraser 5.86a and see if you obtain the same speedy result but without the bug.

    Hello shankle,

If you have intel cpu you can give HDDErase a go for wiping the entire HDD.
It's available on UBCD ISO @ http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/. Besides HDDErase it contains a few other wiping programs.

    More problems I'm afraid.
    The Vista system is fine.

Tried to run Eraser_portable on wiffies Windows XP Pro Puter. I thought I entered the parameters correctly. Wipes set to one and clicked on unused disk space. Running version "eraser_portable_5.82_rev_3.paf.exe". I looked on the site but could find only one place to download from and only this version.
The program runs to about 61% then starts to
process a record about every 2 to 4 minutes.
I finally cancelled it and used Acronis TI to
restore the Puter. The Eraser_portable evidently
wiped out the "ntldr" file and it wouldn't boot.
    Thanks for any help offered.

I used ERASER for a while too, under VISTA. It gave some strange behavior, so I ununstalled it. I can't really blame it on Eraser, but I was too lazy to investigate further.
