SpaceX has asked the International Telecommunication Union to arrange spectrum for 30,000 additional Starlink satellites.

SpaceX, which is already planning the world’s largest low-Earth-orbit broadband constellation by far, filed paperwork in recent weeks for up to 30,000 additional Starlink satellites on top of the 12,000 already approved by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.
The FCC, on SpaceX’s behalf, submitted 20 filings to the ITU for 1,500 satellites apiece in various low Earth orbits, an ITU official confirmed Oct. 15 to SpaceNews.

“As demand escalates for fast, reliable internet around the world, especially for those where connectivity is non-existent, too expensive or unreliable, SpaceX is taking steps to responsibly scale Starlink’s total network capacity and data density to meet the growth in users’ anticipated needs.”

SpaceX says it plans to begin offering broadband services to customers with its massive internet-from-space initiative, known as Starlink, as early as mid-2020, SpaceNews reports. The company needs to complete six to eight launches, with 60 satellites per ride, in order to get the service up and running, SpaceX president and COO Gwynne Shotwell told reporters during a media roundtable in Washington, DC.

However, the remaining satellites raised themselves to higher altitudes and seem to be working. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Monday night that he was going to send a tweet using the Starlink system. “Whoa, it worked!!” he wrote.
There’s still a lot of work to be done before people can start getting internet from Starlink. Apart from launching satellites, SpaceX still needs to finish developing its user terminal, a small device that customers will use to receive broadband signals from the satellites. The company also needs to figure out how it will roll out the service, according to SpaceNews.

At the first-ever U.S. Air Force Space Pitch Day, a two-day event for the military arm to talk to non-traditional startups and businesses, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the company’s massive Starship rocket will be ludicrously cheap to get into orbit.

“If you consider operational costs, maybe it’ll be like $2 million,” Musk said during an event, as quoted by Space.com. “This is much less than even a tiny rocket, so it’s something that needs to be made.”
While that sounds like a lot, it’s a tiny fraction of what existing launches cost: on average, NASA spends an average of $152 million per launch — meaning that, if Musk is to be believed, SpaceX will be able to launch cargo and people into orbit for 1.3 percent of what NASA is currently paying for the same task.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with a thrice-flown first stage and a previously used nose cone fairing is poised for blastoff Monday on a Veterans Day flight to boost 60 Starlink internet relay satellites into orbit. It is the second batch in a planned constellation of thousands intended to provide broadband service around the world.

Monday's launch, along with 60 satellites launched in May and another four batches planned for the next year or so, will put about 360 satellites into orbit, providing coverage over much of the United States and Canada in 2020.
Twenty four launches — more than 1,400 satellites — will be needed to provide global coverage starting in 2021, but SpaceX plans to continue boosting the total to provide additional bandwidth. The total number of satellites that might ultimately end up in orbit is not yet known.

Satellite launches planned by private companies like Amazon and SpaceX risk ruining the view of the night’s sky from Earth, astronomers have warned.

Their presence could interrupt radio frequencies used for observing the universe, while also disrupting images from optical telescopes.

“These satellites are about the size of a table, but they’re very reflective, and their panels reflect lots of the sun’s light, which means that we can see them in images that we take with telescopes,” Dhara Patel, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, told the BBC.
Others have played down concerns about the impact the satellites will have, with Olivier Hainaut, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Germany, saying it would only affect around 0.8 per cent of their telescopes’ observations.

SpaceX launched its second Falcon 9 rocket in the span of just four days on Wednesday at 9:25 PM EDT (6:25 PM PDT). This one was carrying 60 more satellites for its Starlink constellation, which will bring the total currently in operation on orbit to 480. The launch took off from Florida, where SpaceX launched astronauts for the first time ever on Saturday for the final demonstration mission of its Crew Dragon to fulfill the requirements of NASA’s Commercial Crew human-rating process.

Today’s launch didn’t include any human passengers, but it did fly that next big batch of Starlink broadband internet satellites, as mentioned.
