I am a virtualbox user on linux hosts. I mainly run Windows 10 as guest. I am wondering if a switch to Vmware or Qemu will give a noticeable boost in performance. I am most interested in a responsive, low-latency VM. I don't care so much if it is opensource or proprietary and I don't work with snapshots. I am not so concerned about GPU performance.
I switched to VMware on Ubuntu host and I find it more responsive than Vbox as long as the guest is not stored on a NTFS partition.
I use VirtualBox, I have occasionally wondered about this myself. VirtualBox is just simple to use. I might give Qemu a shot some day. I use Slackware64-current as host. The Linux quest run well enough on this 4 CPU, 8GB host. I give most Linux guest 2 CPU's and 2GB's. My Windows 10 guest gets 4BG and 2CPU's which can bog my system down some.
I feel lagginess most when running a Windows 10 guest. It's just so heavy. But it feels lighter when running in VMware on a linux host.
I have often thought about switching over to a different VM. My biggest worry is my losing my activation of Windows. This is an Window 7 to Windows 10 upgrade so I very reluctant to give it a try.
