    Hello everyone,

    I am so happy to find you guys. I'm pretty new to this game so please forgive me if there have been many postings for this topic....

    Well, I've tried to delete these 'index.dat files', but a window pops up saying that I can't remove or move this file because it's in use.

    Will spywareBlaster take care of this problem if I install it, or will the program actually just block the in/out of info from this file.

    Any insight into this problem will be greatly appreciated.

    :) Hi Ninja!

    What is your OS? Index.dat is an essential file on Win98/se. More members here can fill in concerning the other ones. If you were able to remove it from Win98, you would not be able to use your computer anymore. Just as an example. :D

    Take care and do not delete any file until you are absolutely certain that it is safe to do so.

    Glad you came here and asked first.

    Best regards

    hey prince,

    thanks for the reply. My OS is WinXP.....do you think that's a problem. if so, how do most people take care of these pests? Can a regular technician take care of these things?

    Sorry about the questions, but these things are driving me up a wall.

    thanks again

    I have had sucess with using the CLEANXP.BAT from the Langa List.
    http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2002/2002-04-04.htm#12

    You must customize it for your particular case.

    It must be run from a RunOnce registry entry as these are run before the index.dat gets locked by the system.

    Create a cleanxp.reg file with the following entries and I hope they don't wrap. Then merge it into the registry
    === copy-n-paste ======
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
    "CleanXP"="C:\\CleanXP\\Cleanxp\\cleanxp.bat"
