Are there any KMPlayer users on this forum? I installed KMPlayer about 3 weeks ago, and after installing it my default programs kept getting set to Window's default settings. I would change them, and within minutes they would get changed back to Window's default. I then got a warning from Windows (I believe it was from Windows anyway if my memory serves me correctly) that an application running on my system was changing my default application settings.

Has anyone else experienced this? I tried KMPlayer a few years ago, and rolled my machine back then because of malware like behavior. I don't remember exactly what the problem was then since it's been so long ago so I can't give any details. Little to say, I rolled my machine back this time as well.

Well that's not good. I have nothing to contribute that could help identify or confirm that program's behavior. However I do have the latest KMPlayer "Portable Only" and no such problems seen yet. And this is why I use Portables with not just video players but any other program that has a portable equivalent because those programs that run with attachments to either the registry or some other area "installed', has made issues for my systems in the past. Whether deliberately sabotaged with some infection or simply bad coding conflicts.

With portables if they act up I DELETE them/folder-files and all then move on to one which proves over time trouble-free.

I agree, I think it's either deliberate, or bad coding practices. I tried removing KMPlayer from the registry before rolling my machine back. There were way too many to deal with, and i wasn't sure if some of them could be safely removed. I spent about 20-30 minutes removing registry keys before throwing in the towel. It was just pointless, the damage had already been done.

Something's not right here. Are you saying that you've been putting up with this for 3 weeks and neither reported the issue nor tried to uninstall KMP? Or you installed KMP 3 weeks ago and this behavior began recently so you rolled the system back? I'm just trying to see whether KMP was the culprit at all. If you say that this behavior stopped after a rollback then OK, but this just isn't logical to me.
Those must be the file associations in the HKCR hive. It's normal for media players to have gazillion entries there when they're set as defaults, whether they're portable or not (looking at EASTER). That leads me to think that KMP was the default media player and that you have a different kind of issue on your system. I may be wrong though.

Point well taken and no dispute some "portable" media players still zone into registry branches. On my Portable Version of KMPlayer is about a dozen (I counted them all) entries. One of which is......

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\KMPlayer.ksf\shell\play\command]
    @="\"C:\\Users\\Technician\\Desktop\\VIDEO\\KMPlayerPortable\\App\\KMPlayer\\KMPlayer.exe\" \"%1\""

There is obviously a big difference between running it installed vs running it Portable. Full Installation of most any audio/video program commonly can be found to throw a ton of multiple entries into various locations. Never seen the logic in that myself since they work every bit as well in portable form and makes removal/uninstall simple as pie IMO.

A media player must have a single entry in HKCR registry hive for each file type it is associated with. So you can double click it. If you are using this player as a default there is little point in running it portable, since it will embed itself in the registry anyway thus becoming a non-portable app.
Moreover, even media players that are not set as defaults do set their keys in the same HKCR hive, so you can have their entries in context menu 'open with..."

    Makes sense.

On this end however it IS NOT the default player, moreover, NONE of the portable media players get that honor on any of these systems and then so the default player remains WMP. Fire up up the portable video player first, tap a folder or disc etc, and all runs smooth as a good wine. Click any media file directly, and the Windows Default picks up. Like having all worlds on a single machine and works to perfection. Always has.

Where I seen folks run into issues is by making certain players Default, and Windows being finicky Windows that it always has, sometimes interferes trying to regain some control which it started out with. Crazy stuff, yes, and why it's been a good practice on this end to leave WMP alone and use Portable players to work separately.

So downloaded PotPlayer some time ago to test it out and wasn't impressed at all. Is it got any better?

Still am amazed at how crisp and clean my avi's-mp4's (classics for the most part) show on the KMPlayer screen. It's as though the pixels, as old or even a bit fuzzy as some can be, look super sharp almost like High Definition. Disappointed in a way KMPlayer is done but maybe it didn't need anymore development. The version I still use can compare easily with the likes of VLC and others IMO.

    Version 2.2.1 Portable courtesy PortableApps.com.

It got better the moment it appeared in my opinion. May not work for you, of course.
I have a HTPC running various (mostly HD but 4K as well) video material on a 52" practically 24/7.
Korean PotPlayer is the only player I'll use. It's that good. I tried and used in the past every player/HTPC app in existence.

Thank You @Seer for some feedback from your own experience.

Pot Player is laying around in one of my units I rotate but not lately. If it's anything near as beautiful as KMPlayer here on 8.1 I would like to give it a try. Think i'll D/L it now and check it out later.

Again, thanks. Although you seem to use on it HD + 4K (I have those as well), I am thoroughly impressed that KMPlayer (last version) even with it's current abandonment plays my MP4's-AVI's (Sci-Fi nut here) extremely more crisp and clean which is something of a shock to me actually.

I agree that it's not very pretty and it was even uglier before. Honestly. looks like a half-baked app. It has a couple of in-built skins but you don't ever wanna see those, trust me. But it is so well coded that I rarely see this quality in any type of app. It's resource usage is widely praised (unbelievably low) and I can write an essay on features. It simply runs circles around both VLC and MPC on both accounts. I tested this extensively, long ago though.

    [EDIT]
    Star Trek here.

Same. Star Trek original every episode repeated uncovers new finds and is like living with things now that were only a prospect or wish when I was a boy. Amazing!! So prophetic in every way which is now true and some yet to come.

The low resource energy use to produce such a perfect smooth uninterruptable (unlike some) running of Windows Media associations motion picture vids is a bargain with any Media Player capable of such feat.

With some avi's-MP4's etc. that are commonly blurry or distorted, KMPlayer acts as though it reassembles pixels on the fly rapidly in advance before displaying them on screen.

A real masterful piece of quality work n effort
