i have one system that imgburn just refuses to work right on. aside from ashampoo and nero (or ANYTHING AS BLOATED as nero lol) what do you use and why? running win7 x64 on this system. i have asked in the past over at the imgburn forums and they just say its the media. its not. this media burns perfect on a different system using the very same model burner (optiarc)

    thoughts?

the free one doesnt do iso to and from the disc though or am i wrong?? i def need something to make a iso from the disc and be able to re burn it again..

just tried infrarecorder which actually worked well but it does not properly do cdtext for a audio disc from mp3's at least it didnt for me. even imgburn now can do audio discs with proper cd text.

i like burnaware though a bit basic i though i would need the paid version to get all the features. i would say imgburn is still my fav but as i said it just doesnt work on this one system and i have never been able to figure out why i assume some kind of hardware compatibility issue somewhere

    zfactor,

I like ImgBurn too but I also use BurnCDCC (TeraByte free app), especially for command line work although it has an easy to use GUI.

    burncdcc.exe /O /F /V /S=8 /I=yourfile.iso

You can also convert bootable floppies, virtual floppies, .bin, .img and .ima files to bootable CDs.

Burnaware free does let you make iso from your files and from disc. Cdburnerxp too.

No you don't wanna try Starburn. It's the only portable app that i've used that it actually installs adware (Relevant Knowledge if i remember) on your machine even if you untick it

    I've experienced no such behaviour.

I've downloaded the portable version to check and there's no adware/spyware bundled with it.According to Softpedia the software is clean and URLVoid lists the site as safe.

Having run the portable version no toolbars or extras are present in IE9.

You're right, it's clean now. Good for them!
When i first heard about Starburn, couple of months back, i was very impressed because i read that aside from a burner it is a dvd authoring software too. And portable! I downloaded to test it and as i said it was bundled with adware

edit: not true portable, writes settings to the registry and to Windows Directory o_O

yikes starburn is near 80mb and more when actually installed. imgburn is 3.10 lol some difference....though starburn didnt use almost any ram while burning maybe 6-8mb and imgburn uses 70-100 burning a full iso.

so... so far my list of what i have tried:

infrarecorder i really like this app except it just like ashampoo has a problem adding cdtext to music cd's i even tried again to manually enter (they make you enter each track name/artist by itself) and still no cdtext even though i did in fact enter it this time since it doesnt pull them from the mp3 info and they say it can do cdtext im not sure how it does it i tried 4 times. otherwise nice program overall and has almost anything i need but i do use the audio feature often arghhh. also seemed to give me the same speed error each time that "it wasnt checked" or something to that effect.

burnaware: i actually got a trial of the pro version to test and its really pretty awesome. cd text seems to work fine and everything else i did as well its just very basic and doesnt have many options to set. im not a huge fan of its gui personally though its nice and simple and under 30mb installed for the pro version and memory usage was around 16-20 most of the time but it uses 2 procc one for the gui and one for each module. can do almost everything just very basic in appearance and usage and i dont see how / why they charge 40$ for the pro version when most companies have something just like it for free.

cdburnerxp: a very nice simple program with a lot of settings and features similar to imgburn (except nothing really compares to imgburn when it comes to its settings imo well nothing free anyway) just not focused on the iso's and easier to use for most. it requires .net 4 to run with i personally dont like but for most thats not a concern. i got a mixed bag of burns with it though. out of 4 iso's 2 were readable / playable the other 2 gave me errors. audio burned and played okay though. tried to install registry mechanic during the install if not unchecked. cdtext worked great and i had to make no changes in the title or artist for each track.. nice. used between 24 and 60mb of ram similar to imgburn. and only 12mb on disc space which is far better than many of the others. just something i didnt like overall and the 2 bad iso's kinda gave me a bad taste though this is one i will explore further i think to see what happened there.

starburn: mixed thoughts. a decent gui though a bit dated and with redundant buttons on top and at the side almost as if they didnt know which way they wanted to go and they just left both of them. imo pick side or top. used almost no ram even during a burn maybe 6-8mb!! took up the most disk space of these i tried almost 80mb. prob due to the disk authoring tools etc. burned everything i threw at it and didnt complain and everything played. i have not yet checked the audio disks for cdtext which i will here soon but unless i missed it i saw no way to edit or enter the track names anywhere unless it pulls the info by itself and burns it but sometimes i would like to change that info if it is not correct.

so far just some basic thoughts

I used deepburner for a long time as a basic tool. Always did a good job, just a little spartan unless you buy it. I use imgburn mostly though.

There are a few other decent apps I used on XP quite a few years ago that were very small but good. I don't have those anymore so I cannot give you the titles. However, I found them at RyanVMs webpack forums, where guys had made packages you could use them in an unattended install situation. They might still be archived there.
