If I provided a FREE to all service then I would certainly try to offset the costs by showing my subsidiaries as the "favored" result. At the bottom of the Google search page is a "How Search works" link. The ambiguous information almost acts as a disclaimer for the results. Most people are aware of this, and yet they still choose Google as their goto search engine.
