UH Oh!! problems

Am in the midst of running a chkdsk (on another computer) and am seeing...

File record segment 20104 is unreadable
File record segment 20105 is unreadable
File record segment 20106 is unreadable
File record segment 20107 is unreadable
File record segment 20360 is unreadable
File record segment 20361 is unreadable
File record segment 20362 is unreadable
File record segment 20363 is unreadable

it goes on for quite a few others...
anybody knowledgeable folks care to comment on how much trouble I've got. and why it might have occured

System is XP btw

 

Yep could be uh oh, don't want to frighten you but, it may well indicate that the drive is about to fail - save your data now.
The data may or may not be recoverable, may depend on what tools you have - what utilities does the maker of the drive have, most if not all have free tools.
Try a chkdsk /r from the recovery console.

Have you had any improper shutdowns, in other words power failure/power button instead of going through Windows, this can cause physical damage and your lost data would be unrecoverable. Have you had any BSODs?
Electrical Pollution - stray voltage, common name 'Dirty Electricity.'

 

Thanx Meriadoc, the problem occured after a power outage, I think I have recovered most of the problem although not 100% sure yet. It seemed to destroy an fdisr snapshot, and I was unable to recover that, even on a copy/update. Still working through the problem. Need to replace my UPS it's old and looks like the battery has failed, it should have saved me.

 

Ok fingers crossed, it looks like I have escaped major problems (any hardware failure) Seems my primary snapshot was trashed, couldn't even update to correct it, not sure if this will extend to any other snaps. Ran chkdsk /r and have rebuilt a primary snap, decided to take the opportunity to make some changes.

I have a related question, my main drive is partitioned into c (os) and D (data). Could I have put my XP cd in and reinstalled a clean OS without losing / effecting the D partition or would it have wiped the entire drive?

 

Yes, you would just use the arrow keys and choose partition.

Unfortunately all is still not well as fdisr throws up some 15000 odd errors on occaision. So unfortunately some serious damage still exists somewhere.

 

You seem only too aware that damage may have occurred to your HD,so suggest you backup and run diagnostic tests using the software provided by the HD manufacturer ASAP.

In my experience the symptoms may be of a dying disk,but hopefully not!
