Please explain? Is the firewall responding to fewer applications than before?

 

No, that way, it remians the same, funny that NetVeda is acheiving the same level of app control with far fewer interventions and DLL fingerprinting to boot.

For once, I allowed JPF to revert to factory settings when I installed 1.0.1.57, just to see if I have been missing anything important. I wasn't. I reverted to my old configuration.

They say that interface settings are being remembered correctly now. They're not. The columns on the Log tab (main window) still aren't remembered; at least on my box.

All in all, a total waste of time upgrading.

 

Sorry should have written un-cluttered, yes, the rule remembering process is still a problem as also the frequent auto loading of Optimal Policy by Jetico on its' own.

 

Arup, are you saying that JPF loads the config by itself from time to time with no changes to rules?

 

Yep, according to the logs, Optimal Policy loaded is indicated over and over again from time to time even though I have not hit the reload button or changed or added any new policies.

JPF monitors its variables (like Trusted zone) and system IP settrings.
It reloads current security policy whenever changes are detected.

Strange, on my box WinXP the changes that I make to the columns now finally get saved. One small problem though I have noticed, if I view one of Jetico's tabs and then close Jetico's GUI, the next time I restart my system on load up of Jetico it will pop up and show that same tab I was viewing the last time. This new version fixed a memory leak that I had so I am happy with the progress that they are making.

 

On my system, the column order is still not saved, in version 1.0.1.57. However, I have found that the main JPF window reappears, in error, after every reboot. I also know why: The REG_DWORD value SW (which I assume means "show window") under the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jetico\Personal Firewall\1.0\FWUI gets set to 1, rather than to 0, when the window is closed. A value of 1 makes the window show upon launch.

I've reported both issues to Jetico.

Yep, you're right about the registry value setting for SW. I reported this problem to Jetico yesterday and they replied back to me today saying a quick fix is to change that value to 0. It works fine just so long as you don't ever open and close Jetico's interface again. Hopefully the next release will fix this issue along with the problem that your still having with the saving of the column order.

 

Yeah, as I mentioned, opening and closing the window makes it stick on 1 again. Problem is, I open and close the window frequently.

My solution (until it's fixed) was to create a REG file that reset the value to 0 every time I shut down--and I invoke that REG file using the native (but little-known) ability that WinXP has to run scripts on shut down (Start > Run > gpedit.msc > OK > Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts (Logon/Logoff) > Logoff).

 

I've been looking around for a firewall and tried out Jetico last night. Just briefly do any of you have any experience with it's use with XP fast user switching. It seemed to lock my PC up when I tried to switch users. And then when I tried to reinstall it, well, it just didn't want to go. I hjad to use brute force.

Help Needed! I have Windows XP and on installing the Jetico Personal Firewal and testing with 'ShieldsUp' from GRC ports 135 and 139 are shown to be open,all others being stealthed.Could someone please tell me how to close these two ports?

Just finished reading through the previous 523 posts to learm from your experience with Jetico. Quite helpful!

I am a longtime Atguard user. It has served me well for many years, but it is becoming more obsolete with each new Windows service pack and patch. I am now exploring alternatives, particularly JPF.

I am still a bit puzzled about how to create rules that correspond to the rules I have created in Atguard, and in which tables to place them in. For instance, there are two main rules I create for each of a number of clients who access my file/database server. They execute an application using UNC mapping and connect to SQL server on port 1433. I only allow these two accesses from each individual IP address.

In Atguard, it was quite simple and straightforward to create 2 rules for each IP as follows:

Allow incoming TCP/UDP
remote IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
local port: 445, remote port: any
application: system


Allow incoming TCP
remote IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
local port: 1433, remote port: any
application: sqlservr.exe

This was the majority of my rules, with also a few for VNC, IE, FTP etc.

If anyone has any examples or guidance on creating tables and rules, it would be helpful if you could post it or send it to me.

I really think JPF is my answer, but I just can't get the hang of setting up rules in it. (I am still early in the learning curve, so maybe it seems more difficult than it actually is.)

any examples of your setup would be appreciated. I requested additional information and examples from Jetico twice but got no reply.

(sure wish someone could solve the tcpip.sys/atguard conflict. I am very attached to that firewall.)
