Ok, that’s fair. If you restore a backup from before you installed Reflect X, then you’d have to reinstall the Reflect X upgrade if you wanted to keep appending to MRIMGX image sets. Otherwise, whatever Reflect version you ended up creating new backups in MRIMG format, appending if possible to the newest matching MRIMG set that exists.

I suppose it's possible that all my issues are RE related. But I doubt that. I've built it more than once, and tried to restore images 7 times, that were verified as good; 4 X and 3 v8. All failed. There was nothing in the logs to indicate why.

Have you tried using WinPE 11 instead of WinRE 11 to isolate variables in your system’s own WinRE partition? The error in the first screenshot you posted is error text thrown by Windows Update. Reflect sometimes passes up errors thrown by underlying Windows components. I have no idea what circumstances would cause a Windows Update error to even occur in WinRE, much less be thrown up at Reflect, but trying WinPE 11 will at least give you a consistent, Macrium-tested foundation on which to build Rescue Media, unlike a WinRE partition that gets customized on a per-system basis before Reflect even gets to it.

Macrium forum: Reflect X Subscription 11 October 2024 1:37 AM by Sigma

‘ … on their announcement video on YouTube for Reflect X, the comments were largely negative, and a handful of people complained that their comments were being deleted, then comments were disabled completely, and now the video has been set to "unlisted". … ‘

    I can attest to:

    1. the video being present yesterday or the day before

    2. the comments being largely negative

    3. at least one poster complaining about his comments being deleted, and

    4. my not being able to find the video this morning

The worst-case I would worry about, if I were relying on Reflect X, is that Macrium/Paramount is hiding comments about people being unable to restore Reflect X images.

It's turning into a PR nightmare for them. I hope they get it under control.

Of course this would be bad. But if it happens, hopefully (and I think so) such comments would be posted somewhere else, e.g. here at Wilders. ;)

I don't understand this particular panic.

The v8.1 TRIAL and the v8.1 SUBSCRIPTION are exactly the same... when either runs out, they become RESTORE ONLY and work, in that capacity, just fine. vX SUBSCRIPTION works exactly the same way. This was tested by me, as a BETA tester, and it worked as advertised. Why does everyone, all of a sudden, not believe this particular specification... possibly a bit of paranoia?

Some users may be having some sort of issues but I have not seen them as of yet. Even mixed format chains (v8 & vX) work just fine. If vX images into an existing v8 chain, it uses the old v8 format until a new chain (Full) is started. At that time the new vX format is used to create the new chain. That's why you can't test for speed improvements until you are in a new format image chain.

An imaging program is essential for me, if I have problems. I use Macrium, as well as TB IFW and Hasleo. I will always use at least two.
I have tried just about every other: ATI, AOMEI, EaseUS, Paragon, Veeam, and more, until it failed me, or was too cumbersome.
Macrium has always been reliable, and I am comfortable with it.
I don't really like a subscription payment model, but if it's necessary to ensure sustainability then so be it.
If you don't want to pay an annual sub, just don't upgrade. Simple.
Went for the half-off deal. No problems with Reflect X so far.

Please could you give me a link where Macrium explains how the existing licenses for v8.1 will work from now on? Of course I do not distrust your words. ;) I simply have a non-subscription license (for v8.1) and would like to get some information about the situation. Searching on their homepage, until now I could not find anything. - Thanks.

The Reflect X FAQ page is a good start: https://www.macrium.com/reflect-x/faq

It confirms that perpetual licenses remain valid perpetually (of course), that Reflect V8 support will continue until further notice but at least for a year after Reflect X's launch, and it confirms restore-only mode.

Thank you very much, jphughan. :) Indeed there is the information I was looking for. I did not expect it on the FAQ page for Reflect X.

Does anyone know how to get rid of that extremely ugly (pixelated) ad for Reflect X in Reflect 8?

    (Without subscribing to X...)

Macrium put their ads in an bmp file called "v9-001aa", which is located in "C:\ProgramData\Macrium\Reflect\". If you delete it and allow Reflect to check for updates. It downloads it again, so you'll need to edit it in your image editor tool as a 1x1 pixel or a blank rectangle etc then overwrite the file.

I updated and tested X last couple of days and I like it so far. System image size is smaller than before and making and restoring image takes a little less time.
I've had a problem with rescue media when I used WinRE, which was not a case with version 8. It had problems with some drivers and I couldn't access my drive with backup images, when I shut down recovery environment it threw BSOD. I then rebuilt rescue media with WinPE and all was good.
I don't like a fact that they went to subscription model licenses only, but if they don't increase subscription price and allow us to use 50% off forever, then I'm OK with the cost.

I already tried that, but still saw the ad (maybe because there was an update?).
    I’ll try that. Thanks!

For the average home user who has a Reflect 8 perpetual license, I see the switch to Reflect X as a donation. I guess they're having financial difficulties, and I'm sorry about that.

Don't get me wrong. I've supported a few small software developers, but I don't intend to do it for Paramount Software.

    So ...
    I own 4 perpetual licenses for v. 8.1.
I am wondering if they will stop working?
I require a software that works locally, without connecting to the internet.

From the above sentence I cannot determine the answers to the following questions. Can you help?
    1. Is a perpetual license for v.8.1 still perpetual?
    2. Will a perpetual license for v.8.1 continue to create images?
    3. Will a perpetual license for v.8.1 continue restore images it created?
    4. For how long will v. 8.1 continue to function?
    Thank you, JP.

No question about it, this is where the creative people hang out.

That's really funny! Thanks for getting my day off to such a great start Hadron.
