Yeah, they have to be hating Hasleo about now. There are also other brandsthat are advertising their permanent license as a feature. I don't mind paying what a product is worth, but I can't have it holding me hostage if I lose my income.
Have you looked at the What’s New pages for the last few releases? If you have and none of that is relevant to you, fair enough. But if you don’t even know what has been added to the product over its last few releases, then maybe it’s no wonder that you don’t know why anyone would upgrade? Sometimes people don’t know they want something until someone shows it to them, so not being able to IMAGINE anything that might make you upgrade doesn’t mean that there isn’t ACTUALLY something along those lines. Henry Ford said that if he had just listened to what people said they wanted, he would have ended up selling faster horses. But here’s a partial list of recent(-ish) changes that will be relevant to at least some people even if they’re “only making/restoring backups”: CBT: Make Diff/Inc backups faster Image Guardian: Protect backups from ransomware viBoot: Use your backups as full VMs rather than only being able to extract data from them or having to actually restore the backup first. tbFAT: Make browsing F&F backups usable when they contain files larger than 4 GB Intra-daily scheduling: Simplify making more than one backup per day Improved image restore wizard: Make it easier to stage custom restore scenarios and achieve intended outcomes when restoring to targets with different capacity from the original source Redesigned Rescue Media Builder and Reflect UI: Make using the application more intuitive/efficient Removable storage and exFAT support: Expand the types of devices/partitions you can back up Updated imaging engine: Make backups faster, and keep them smaller ARM support: Keep using Reflect even if you switch systems from x86 to ARM
In terms of Reflect X’s claim to improved performance, since it’s now been officially announced, here’s a data point I captured during beta testing. I used the default Medium compression to back up the default Windows OS partitions on my NVMe SSD onto a Data partition located on that same NVMe SSD (Samsung 970 Evo Plus). I compared the Reflect X beta to Reflect 8.1, which bear in mind had already introduced noticeably improved imaging performance compared to 8.0. Full backup using 8.1 81.03 GB of source data 33.56 GB image file Completed in 4m7s Full backup using X 81.04 GB of source data 29.34 GB image file Completed in 1m26s So Reflect X delivered a 12.5% reduction in resulting image size, and created it 2.8x faster.
Does it matter if I left the Macrium program open for hours after the completion of a full backup? Normally I would click the OK prompt and close it after a backup completes successfully. This time it was several hours before I got around to clicking OK. Is the image affected at all by this?
I didn’t, but I used the default in both cases. I deliberately avoided using my system during the tests to minimize variables, but for regular backups, I do not see any noticeable performance impact when using typical productivity apps while they’re running.
What where the restore times for each? Have they changed the UI to a more simple one, and, when restoring, less clicks to get the action, from start to finish, to complete all by itself?
Too bad they moved to this new subscription model. I expect their sales will dwindle down to meagre levels and they'll be bought out by Symantec or something and incorporated into bloatware. Can't trust a company who makes it sound like their current users prefer this subscription model. On the other hand, why do they call it "Hasleo Free" when I don't see a paid version. How far down the road will Hasleo Free become feature-limited and/or filled with ads or nagware to upgrade to a paid version?
When I read their nonsense about Reflect customers prefer renting software over buying software for a one of fee, proves they are without doubt liars, which even on the Macrium forum there is actually push back against this nonsense and I hope it backfires on them. Stick with Macrium 8 (or whatever backup software you choose) as the older backup software doesn't just stop working and unless you really need / want to use a feature that the newer version brings to the table (jphughan mentioned them above). The older software will work easily for many more years (especially if it's standalone like Drive Snapshot / Image for Windows / Ghost etc etc).
When I did those tests in the beta, the restore side hadn’t been updated with the new code. It apparently has been now, but I didn’t try restores on my production system like I did with backups. No UI changes so far, but Macrium has been known to make those even within major releases. The overhauled Rescue Media Builder arrived with Reflect 7.2, for example.
Because they are planning to release a paid version, as confirmed by one of their translators at Malwaretips
Thanks. I always thought that the backup wasn’t finished until I clicked the OK box. Good to know that it doesn’t matter.
Where did that number come from? That is significantly larger than the size of the full installers of any edition of the latest Reflect X beta release as of this writing, downloaded directly from Macrium.
@stapp - if your license to use is perpetual, it does not end. Possibly the 1-yr support contract associated with that license may be ending.
If you paid for V8, That is what I understand too. Ya Bit peeved about the new payments here too. Some nice new features and performance hikes, no bloatware blowout, but... Tried to buy '5 pack' licenses for home : Heh: "Family Pack" if you like. After emails with Macrium base: could not be accommodated Would have to buy 4+1 Really@ current sale price: $25 US/PC pa is not awful, just an annoying niggle and it is still a good tool. Might be interesting what happens to annual tithe after next 12 months? There are some effective other options. A bit Interesting ( hubris ?? ) as well that the 400 pages of consumer KB here were ignored : I hope that TRB at least was offered a discount pack !! Drive Snapshot> FDISR>Terabyte/Macrium> ??
I've never cared for that either. You can buy individual licenses with no discount or a 4 pack. I bought the 4 and have only ever used 3 of them. It's been a great product that has always lacked in the purchase options. Also yes, the v8 license is perpetual, but the next time a major Windows release renders it incompatible you'll be done, your forever license won't do any good on a product that isn't going to work. You'll have to move forward with some other option.
Paid for versions 4,5,6 & 8 - support has ended but can't even just install it without jumping through hoops, contact support etc, don't need the hassle. Only kept Macrium for making a secondary backup in case AX64 ever died, now there's Hasleo. As far as Macrium is concerned, I'm out.
Reflect creates labels in the registry as null-embedded keys, after deleting them you can install or reinstall any old or new versions of any edition.
