Larry, I like and respect a honest man. But I am not going to post to questions about this product for those who have not used it. Reason? It is hard to explain. Someone here stated a finally do it all product. That is what it is. The only way to know is not for me to preach it, but for you, to try it. If you dont, that is fine to. All I continue to know is m machines are literally running great with some of the best protection and it is like there is nothing on my PC.

    Hi Jeff,
When the final version comes out will it require removal/install or will it install over this TR?
Glad it is running well on your systems.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

    "Just over a minute" ?

I realise different machines/different results, but I can not come even close to your results: on my rig it took 29 minutes.

scanned partition: size 49 GB, 28 GB data, partition is host of Vista Home Premium. KAV 2009

    scan 1 (setting: "recommended") : 58 minutes
scan 2 (immediately done after scan 1; setting "recommended"): 40 minutes
scan 3 (immediately done after scan 2; setting "all files" & "scan only new & changed files") : 29 minutes

Dell bitburner Dimension 5000, P4, 3.2 MHz HT technology, 2 Gig RAM

    Anyone heard of these files?

    - C:\ProgramData\{0E8E33D8-193A-414A-A909-0F101A142D26}\mia.lib
    - C:\Users\All Users\{0E8E33D8-193A-414A-A909-0F101A142D26}\mia.lib

Kaspersky 2009 is detected them under a full scan. False positive?

The viruslist site will be updated before release to offer more details of "vulnerabilites".... It is as plantextract says software which has not been updated, that contains some sort of vulnerability. Those detections are based on Secunia PSI technology.

    this forum is biased!
    i havnt used it...

but, maybe this is a version that kaspersky users can use without all the moaning nagging problems of previous versions.

    good news for the customers.

I'm going to miss v7 as well... v6 and 7 have served me well and have both worked perfectly giving no problems to me. Guess v8 will as well now :)

    Major Improvements in v8:
    -NEW...HIPS
-NEW...Whitelisting Technology (whitelisting certain programs to automatically allow Kaspersky to decide whether an application can connect to the internet and perform specific activity... less user intervention and more user friendly... less popups and requests from PDM and firewall.
-NEW...Scanning of Vulnerabilities in installed programs (so you can update them to prevent the programs being "exploited" and malware being installed on your computer via them)
-NEW...Advanced Reporting Capabilities (more in depth reports of activity of your programs and more statistics)
-NEW...Virtual Keyboard (to prevent keyloggets logging keys, good to use when entering personal details/passwords)
-NEW...Database of malicious URLs (Alerting users about prolific malware hosting websites)
-NEW...System Restore Wizard (Help fix damage caused to the computer after an infection; restoring functionality)
    -NEW...GUI
-IMPROVED...Speed of overall product components (More efficient and faster scanning and will not slow computer down as much as previous versions thanks to the rebuilt/improved antivirus engine.

Most improvements are "major" in this version IMO compared to v7. Its totally different and MUCH more has been added.

    Other Improvements:
    -Enhanced PDM
    -Improved Heuristics
-New Packer Detection (suspicious packer and multi-packer)

    KAV8 release notes: ftp://ftp.kaspersky.com/devbuilds/TR/KAV/release_notes_kav_en.htm

Thats all I can think of at the moment...

I read about KSN on the forum, but still don't understand it... how exactly does it work and what does it do?

    From the KSN statement:
Kaspersky Security Network service allows users of Kaspersky Lab security products from around the world to help facilitate identification and reduce the time it takes to provide protection against new (“in the wild”) security risks targeting your computer. In order to identify new threats and their sources and to help improve user security and product functionality, Kaspersky Security Network collects selected security and application data about potential security risks targeting your computer and submits that data to Kaspersky Lab for analysis. Such information contains no personally identifiable information about the user and is utilized by Kaspersky Lab for no other purposes but to enhance its security products and to further advance solutions against malicious threats and viruses. In case of accidental transmission of any personal data of the user, Kaspersky Lab shall keep and protect it in accordance with this Data Collection Statement.

You can use the built in packet sniffer to see what KSN is sending out :)

For example, if a malware alert is triggered on a website, it may send information about the domain where the alert was triggered and the detection given by KIS... so for example I visit anywebsite dot com....and I get a webav alert for trojan-downloader.win32.zlob.ddf.... KSN will send the website domain "anywebsite dot come" and verdict of "Trojan-downloader.win32.zlob.ddf" to KL..... this can then be used to fill up the WebAV blacklist of known bad sites.

I found that this option ('agreement to participate in KSN') is automatically reenabled after updating malware databases, even if you choose 'not to participate'.
    Funny :)

I suspect that this feature is also used to detect ilegal/blacklisted keys :thumb:
    just figuring things out.

actually not, that's done by downloading the black.lst files during the update & checking the keys there against yours.

that's not good, there will be a lot of "omg kaspersky wants to steal my underwear" posts

Looks like ESET's ThreatSense.NET or am I wrong?
Who provides the database of malicious websites?

I'm not that concerned about the KSNs purpose ;)
However, i'd like other users to confirm the KSNs option 'behavior' from my previous post.

    Hi Macstorm,

I just tried to deselect KSN, and perform an update.... It was still "off" after the update so it's working OK on my end.

Are you sure you "applied" the change after unticking the boxes? :)

By the way, this is an example of KSN in action:

    I visit an infected site

Infected site tries to load some kind of malware

Alert is given and download is blocked

KSN sends data about the URL and detection for blacklisting the site in future webAV defs/improving detection of new threats.

    ksn1.JPG

Ofcourse, if somebody is not happy with giving out this kind of information then you can easily opt out of KSN or choose not to participate at install.... or if you are feeling paranoid, use the packet sniffer "Network packages analysis" to see what is being sent :p
