Interesting that I have a shortcut for Recall in my start menu using Start11 but I can't find any trace of it anywhere else.

Windows 11 version 21H2 and 22H2 will reach end of support in October, forcing an automatic upgrade to 22H3

It started with updates becoming cumulative a few years back, and now going back to smaller updates. Much ado about nothing.

I usually run dark mode on Windows 11. I noticed today that when I set it to light mode that File Explorer seems much more responsive. Has anyone else experienced this?

I only experience lag on first run and afterwards it's lightning fast. I tried switching to Light mode just now and first run was slow, then switched back to Dark and it was lightning fast.

Thanks for the response. Could be any good number of reasons why something works a certain way or why it only happens to some but after some searching I found a Reddit thread talking about the same thing. It's enough evidence that I don't think I'm just seeing things.
Has anyone experienced more snappier performance in Light mode compared to Dark mode : r/Windows11 (reddit.com)
Light mode burns my eyes but the difference in performance is enough that I guess I'll leave it on light mode. :(

Your linked thread isn't about Explorer specifically, but I get your point, and your experience is your experience. I turn off animations and a lot of the visual effects and try to eliminate potential slowdowns. In the end, who the hell knows what's up with Windows.

Exactly. Interesting (at least to me) is that this does not seem to be an issue with NVIDIA graphics, which seems to lag with light or dark mode. I do see a noticeable difference with Intel graphics. Light mode is much more responsive. I don't have an AMD machine to report on that.

This is my biggest gripe with Microsoft at the moment. I have a solution that makes daily images. I don't want my files in OneDrive where they would likely be stolen the next time Microsoft gets hacked. Yet they keep nagging me and slipping in buttons to start a backup I don't want. I already replaced their start menu. I'm still looking for a File Explorer replacement.

Windows 11 Start Menu is getting a new layout to organize your apps.

Cannot see this making a huge difference to my life.

Nope. I was even happier with Start11 when I found out it could display search results from Everything. I doubt there is anything Microsoft could do to the Start Menu that would get me to use theirs again.

I've seen too many times that a Windows Update made a BitLocker encrypted device unbootable. I do not intend to ever use it.

For real? This sounds horrible, luckily I (almost) never install updates on Windows. And I just read that all new PC's will have BitLocker enabled by default. But how about the speed, will you notice it when it's enabled? I always did wonder why Windows never had such a feature, I even made a topic about it. I mean when your laptop is stolen, you're pretty much toast without any data encryption.

I've never enabled it to see. I had an external drive that was encrypted once (not BitLocker) and it became damaged. Rather than losing some of the files, the entire partition was unbootable. I will take my chances of not using encryption.

Typical modern software nonsense, deprecate a perfectly working tool, replace with a "touch-inspired" ugly, less efficient crayonware that only does 55% of the original. A travesty.

OK I see, so you're not a big fan of encryption. The strange thing is that apparantly it's always enabled on smartphones (Android and iOS), I never had any problems so far. So why can't they get this right on Windows? I don't know about macOS, they also have a FileVault encryption feature, but I believe it's not enabled by default. Perhaps it would be better if you could choose what folders to protect, instead of encrypting all data.
