I look at it a different way.

When the company I work for or local businesses, colleges, universities etc update their infrastructure by updating their computers to Windows 8.1 / 10 then I might consider switching but until then I personally ignore the scaremongering / tinfoil hat theories about the big bad bogeyman lurking in the shadows ready to destroy your operating system because you didn't update it.

Yeah i saw that 'extended' support thing/verbiage. This is the very reason in another post i mentioned microsoft should be busted up. They more or less been enjoying full control of the O/S market and as such they show no interest in what true high tech is all about. Its also about gauging home user/business client reliance and never (cutting tail & run) leaving undone what those predessor versions can produce going forward. Not only that, but what better encouragement for Windows users than satisfaction that a O/S company is indeed very seriously innovative (not kiddish) or sickly greedy and they keep even older versions sufficient enough to last a lifetime.

If MS proved that they cared enough as a (so called) High Teh O/S maker for more than FAT EASY MONEY and arrogant bragging rights for Home & Business clients by keeping those early versions relevant enough, i would be the first to rush out and buy a dozen new computers with their latest 11 releases when they become available.

No wonder they are such a prime target of the entire world and they suffer so much attacks which in turn doesn't hurt them at all, but it does hurt, ruin, and cost major & minor businesses as well as home user's WASTED TIME AND HARD TO COME BY MONEY which could be more productively used for other purposes they depend on to live and conduct their business trouble-free on a daily basis.

Windows is by far the most popular O/S by far, so they likely will always be the prime target for nefarious hackers.

Windows 8.1 runs circles around Windows 10. All it takes is concentrating tweaks and of course now these days a SSD really speeds it up even more.

It would have been and would be exemplary if they offered extra conscientous refined updates (purposeful for user's/clients) before 'extended' support reaches climax on their calendar. They have the means, always have. You can understand that they don't want to, nor can't really, supplant quality top notch security third party businesses.

But by crackie they could at least give those still on 7 and 8 a much better/swifter more refined Windows Defender than the crawly slug they left on it so far.
Hah and they think those regular signature Definitions are good enough. Wash their hands of it.

Most eight units are fully updated except one where there's on the order of 68 important's and of course the optionals so this should help iron matters out. That is if one of them doesn't decide to cripple some good older programs. Ya gotta fish those out and uninstall the culprits.

@Gaddster -- I agree 100% with your post #1026. I'm still using Win7 and have never had any problems whatsoever. If & when I ever do, I image my hard drive 3 times weekly so any problems will be easily fixed.

You can't sell products to people who are happy with their current computers / operating system and other software, so how do you get them to splash out money on new hardware / software?......You resort to scaremongering and putting fear into gullible peoples minds, so as a result many computer users will believe it and fall for the update scam / hustle.

Here in England it got so extreme years ago with this nonsense that shops who used to sell disk imaging software and other backup software completely stopped selling such software (that would actually save the user from disaster) in favour of basically pimping security / virus checkers software onto customers.

Personally I only update software when there is a genuine reason to do so like adding a new useful feature or fixing an known issue etc......Playing the update game is tiresome and is unneeded in most cases.

Two things... unfortunately, as I read it, the extended support will only be for organizations and businesses, not home users. Secondly, it looks like Microsoft has not confirmed or denied the extension of Windows 7 support. As a W7 user, I wish I could get excited about this news, but I think there are good reasons why I shouldn't. TY for the informative post, JR! :thumb:

Well that pours ice water on my expectations. Thanks @Page42 since I reluctantly must agree with your assessment.
Knowing fat daddy M$ why am I not surprised.

I'm using 7 again - I have also two pc with 10 - with a multi layered defence, and also without MS updates from 2020 I hadn't any infection. I say it only to tell my experience.

Yes, they're talking about extended the already available currently available ESU support, which is meant for organizations and businesses. As an individual you can buy single machine ESU licenses from companies that resell them. If they were to extend Windows 8(.1) support, it would be ESU as well I guess, but I would not hold my breath as 8 has a lot smaller userbase than 7.

Afaik Year 2 ESU updates are twice the price of Year 1, and Year 3 again doubles the price. If they continue this trend with another 3 years, Year 6 will be 32 times the price of Year 1
