Towards the end of last year, we first saw renders of an upcoming mid-range OnePlus device shortly after renders of the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro surfaced online. At the time, we believed that the company would launch the mid-range device as the OnePlus 8 Lite alongside its flagships for 2020.
Now, the company has finally confirmed that they’re indeed working on an affordable smartphone which will be launched later this year.

In a recent post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that the company is working to diversify its portfolio and, once again, make affordable smartphones that will give more users the chance to experience OnePlus devices. In an exclusive interview with Fast Company, Lau further revealed that the company is also planning on expanding into new product categories.

While the company hasn’t officially revealed any of the upcoming products, Lau has confirmed that a glimpse of this new strategy will arrive soon with an upcoming announcement for the Indian market. Following that, the company plans to bring affordable devices to other markets, including North America and Europe.

It's long been speculated that OnePlus is working on a more affordable smartphone for this year, going back to the company's pricing roots. Late last month, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed that the company is indeed planning its return to the budget price segment, and now it seems like we have a date for that return.

According to Android Central, citing its own source inside OnePlus, the smartphone known as the OnePlus Z is launching on July 10, at least in India - though a global release shouldn't be too far off.
Additionally, the specs for the device may have been fully unveiled, according to a user on Indian forums DesiDime, first reported by XDA-Developers.

Assuming the survey is hinting at the OnePlus Z, the phone would come with a Snapdragon 765 5G chipset, as well as 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The survey points to a 6.55-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a fingerprint sensor underneath.
Finally, the phone is said to have a 4,300mAh battery with 30W charging.

The survey also suggests a ₹24,990 price for the smartphone, which is roughly equal to $330.87 at the current exchange rate as of the time of writing. Assuming the official price outside of India is in line with that number, it would be a major step down from the $699 starting price of the OnePlus 8.

Now, OnePlus has announced on its forum that it’s working on a “new, more affordable smartphone product line.” The brand adds that there are many people who want a phone with a “more accessible” price.
Unfortunately, it sounds like North America won’t be a part of the first wave of this new product range.

“As we have always done when we try something new, we are going to start relatively small with this new product line by first introducing it in Europe and India. But don’t worry, we’re also looking to bring more affordable smartphones to North America in the near future as well,” the company noted on its forum.

It’s also worth noting that OnePlus is referring to this as a new product line, suggesting that this isn’t a once-off phone like the OnePlus X. This could mean that the OnePlus Z/OnePlus Nord is an annual affair like the mainline OnePlus flagships.

You’re probably wondering why they even needed to confirm this, and you’d be right. We’re not sure why they are doing so now.
Either way, the upcoming affordable Android phone is expected to pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G-enabled chipset, at least 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, plus a quad-camera setup at the rear, alongside a dual front-facing camera setup at the front.

To keep its price low, the entry-level smartphone's display panel will be LCD instead of OLED and the resolution will only be HD+ (720p).
Thankfully, it looks likely that OnePlus’s upcoming budget offering will retain the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Under the hood, a Snapdragon 460 chip will keep things running — a significant downgrade from the Snapdragon 765G on the Nord. Clover will still run the latest OxygenOS skin based on Android 10, or maybe even Android 11 depending on when it launches.

Two sources familiar with the situation told AC that Pei left OnePlus in recent weeks, and no longer appears in the most recent OnePlus organizational chart. Pei co-founded OnePlus with CEO Pete Lau in December 2013, the two having previously worked together at Oppo, and grew OnePlus into one of the most recognized smartphone brands for enthusiasts.
More recently, Pei has headed up the OnePlus Nord brand, which focused on more affordable handsets.

Our confirmation follows a report from Android Police that Pei had likely departed, citing internal OnePlus memos recently surfaced on Reddit. OnePlus declined to comment to Android Central on this story. After publication of this story, TechCrunch reported that Pei left OnePlus to start his own venture, though did not specify whether it is mobile- or tech-related.

OnePlus is reportedly working on a special edition version of its popular mid-ranger — the OnePlus Nord. The upcoming device, called the OnePlus Nord SE, is being developed in partnership with designer Joshua Vides, who is known for his collaborations with Italian luxury fashion brand Fendi.

According to a recent report from phoneArena, the OnePlus Nord SE will only feature a few aesthetic changes, like a redesigned back panel and some custom wallpapers. The report claims that the device will, most likely, offer the same hardware specifications as the original OnePlus Nord, including a 6.4-inch 90Hz AMOLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G SoC, a quad-camera setup on the back, dual-front facing cameras, and a 4,115mAh battery with 30W fast charging support.

As smartphone prices have skyrocketed over the past several years, more manufacturers in 2020 made a point to offer some stripped-down models.
Going into 2021, it sounds like OnePlus is going to do almost the same thing. The OnePlus 9E was reported on earlier this year but may actually turn out to be the “OnePlus 9 Lite,” according to Android Central.

It’ll be interesting to see how the chip selection is reflected in this device’s final price tag. Android Central speculates that the device could arrive for around $600, which would be a good price to hit, even if the phone will probably lack an IP rating or wireless charging.

TheThe OnePlus Nord N10 5G does something unique: bring 5G to a $299.99 phone without cutting too many corners. That’s a full $200 lower than other budget-oriented competitors like the Google Pixel 4A 5G and Samsung Galaxy A51 5G. Alongside its lower-tier N100 sibling, it’s the first phone in OnePlus’ midrange Nord series to arrive in the US, available from T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, and unlocked from OnePlus.com and other retailers.

It’s definitely noteworthy that the N10 5G will bring 5G to the under-$300 market.
The question for the N10 5G is whether you’d be happy with a decent all-around device that doesn’t shine in any particular area, or if you should look to one of its budget competitors that goes all in on a feature like battery life or photo quality.

After initially only launching in selected markets, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and N100 are set to go on sale from January 15 in the US.

Both handsets will go on sale exclusively at T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile, making them the very first prepaid OnePlus devices available on a US carrier to date. Everything else on the US versions of the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and N100 remain the same, including the, frankly, sickeningly bad update schedule.

That said, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G comes with a 6.49-inch 90Hz IPS LCD display, uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and has 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage.
The OnePlus Nord N100 is a 4G-only device that has a 6.52-inch 90Hz IPS LCD display. It utilizes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage.

For those interested, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and N100 will also be available to purchase in the US direct from oneplus.com priced at $299.99 and $239 respectively. You’ll have to wait until 10:00 am ET on January 8 to pre-order, with devices shipping from January 15, 2021.
