For the first time in its history, Windows Defender is not in the last place! Still heavy but this is a small improvement.

 

I have been using Avira, Kaspersky, and Windows Defender lately on two fast Win10 computers, and even though Kaspersky and Avira do seem to be a bit snappier than Windows Defender, the difference is hardly noticeable. Different results could be affected by conflicts, old hardware, low Ram, and configuration.

 

Product experience can definitely vary by machine. Overall I do find the scores posted to be somewhat accurate.

 

I find them way more accurate than AV-TEST which IMO inflates the performance aspect or they use some strange tests that make most AVs seem light.

On any system that I use including the beast laptop I have in my signature, the moment I disable Windows Defender everything becomes much snappier ranging from simply browsing files with thumbnails in File Explorer to installing apps.

I agree about AV-TEST's results. I remeber when ESET was tested it always got bad results, which was not in line with my experience installing it on different systems.

I also agree with you about WD - while perfomring some actions (copying files, installing software...) it degrades performance considerably. It might not be noticeable for everyday usage but when performing maintenance, I always disbale WD to gain some speed.

im still wonder who belive in these fake test for marketing supose where everyone are winner

Meanwhile when i run test on mine samples or samles shared by mates
score jump and down from 5% ratio to 35% detection in good senario
and there come av-comporatives where all AV have always incredible 97-99% ratio detection

Truly said, I have license for both Kaspersky and Avira too.

Never find any big difference in both in terms of speed or resources. Both are light and effective.

Even I have few old machines, where Avira is better.

 

I second that, Windows Defender performance could be better.

 

But your experience doesn't really mimic the 300 million configurations running W10, it may, it may not, its so subjective what runs best on who's ever computers.

Most people consider Windows Defender light because that's probably the only thing they used. They think whatever small lag is just the norm or they might not even feel it until they try something else. I am not biased against any AV but I just want the max performance and don't tell me it performs differently on different systems, it performs the same on every system I've tried it on, just take a look at my sig, if I can feel the performance lag with Windows Defender on this laptop then I don't know what else to tell you.

Most people not even consider use alternative most peoples are just too lazy..
if you dont put them something under nose they will amlost never put hand for try, check out something other/new.

Same situation explain why people sit on admin account instead of create limited acc and sit with SRP on these account.

I see every day how people isntand of check/ask google for simple question/issue and take answear in 5-10s they ask me/other on forum bc are lazy to use google..

And i have finding solution with out knowlage and help them find solution for these issue with success

That might be true for cyber security enthusiasts like yourself. However, other people have better things to do with their PCs other than testing/configuring AVs all day.

 

This is not enthusias this is basic knowlage about pc and system, how to use propertly and safe and not work on admin acc but on standar acc.
That why linux is more safe fromup bc during intal punish user to use both of account mean while windows not requirte it during instalation and you can do it later by myself way(where ofc most peoples skip it)

Other way i could call all enthusias car who fasten seat belts in the car and study rules which are need to pass driver test..

unfortunly pc everyone can get from up...
And later we have what we have - zombie network which work till these day.

I remember Avast performance was good a few years ago, is latest version fat and full of ads?

 

yes you need to choose custom installation and get rid of many things. I only choose to install the File Scanner and behavior shield. I need nothing else personally, not even the web protection.

It has a software updatare, WiFi security scanner, DNS, safe shopping, secure browser, and so much more. It's like you're installing one of those snake oil system optimization apps you find advertised everywhere.

 

I have 3 systems, and 2 of them have 8 GB or ram and windows defender was noticable in making the system more sluggish and less responsive when I tried to use it. Kaspersky on the other hand is VERY light and I DO notice a big difference. I have a question though.... I have also tried Avira and it is indeed lighter also but does it have all the full protection Kaspersky free offers, with the system watching and anti ransomware? (I can't remember!)

The web protection used to be required for CyberCapture to function properly. But last I heard that wasn't the case anymore.

 

Thanks much. Yea looks like avira free is a little more crippled and doesn't offer ransomware protection free.

 

Avast/AVG are amongst the most bug ridden AV software I have ever seen. I should use the term "ini hell" as the configuration files are really mismanaged. I do not recommend using it at this stage.
