Kindle Adblocking?

I've just acquired a new Fire HD10 tablet predominantly for streaming. The 'Silk' browser is basically a Chrome clone.



I've searched the app store but all it can show me are a handful of AV's. Has anyone managed to block ads on a new Fire HD?

 

Although DNS blocking has it's limitations, something like pi-hole should help across the majority of the web. It does tend to fall short when it comes to pre-roll ads on video sites though.
Not sure about specific Fire HD/Silk browser adblockers unfortunately.

OK thanks, I'll have to check all these options out. I figured there'd be a consumer lock-in with Amazon. I'm not that bothered about general browsing with the Fire HD but it would have been nice to be able to install Firefox.

 

Adguard also works and may be a better fit, just remember they have differences.

Pi-Hole is local to your LAN. You have the ability to whitelist blocked domains if blocking is causing an app/site not to work and blacklist items not covered by default lists. Pi-hole also shows stats and a log of all requests your device has made if you choose to enable it.

On the negative side pi-hole will require more work to set up/maintain and will cost money if you're getting a raspberry pi to install it on. Unless you open external/internet traffic up to your pi-hole (I seriously don't recommend) you won't be able to use it when not connected to your WiFi.

Adguard DNS is convenient, very easy to setup and will work without having to be connected to your LAN, it's also completely free of charge.

With Adguard you won't have control over blocklists and can't whitelist/blacklist or see stats from what I can tell. You also send all of your DNS requests to Adguard (founded in Russia I believe). To be clear I have no reason to distrust Adguard more than I'd distrust my ISP with DNS requests but it's worth being aware of regardless.

 

you can sideload firefox onto your kindle.

 

Thanks. I'm ok with Russia, I really just wanted something simple, preferably on the tablet itself.

You might want to try the open source app Blokada. I'm currently testing it on my phone. NetGuard seems a bit more complex, but I haven't tried that one yet. It's amazing how much traffic occurs on you phone/tablet when your not using it. Blokada makes it a bit more transparent.

 

OK thanks. I will have to look into NetGuard at some stage. Sideloading may be an option, although I'm not sure if it will work with the newest Kindle Fire.

Thanks. I've looked at a lot of options, but the very newest Kindles don't seem very compatible with previous solutions. Firefox is listed as currently 'unavailable' in the Kindle store, maybe eventually it will be compatible again. There was a Firefox for Kindle.

 

i think you misunderstood the concept of sideloading. you will dl its apk from fdroid or mozilla, not from the "kindle store".

 

No, I think I understand what you mean by sideloading, I was just saying that Firefox was available at one time from the Kindle store. I may just wait a bit to see if Firefox can be downloaded from the Kindle store sometime in the future.

 

i see. but you should bear in mind that you'll need to sideload any other alternative as well, be it blokada or netguard.

if sideloading sounds intimidating, then you should go with ag dns. simple yet effective.
