I fully agree with you, it actually blocks less than hpHOSTS. Just use the portable "Patch My PC" + Malwarebytes browser extension and you have a better Thor Foresight/Heimdal Pro for free.
or just use a proper AV or Forticlient's Web module. best web sigs undoubtadly (Kaspersky, Forticlient, ESET, Avast/AVG)
If these cover the mysterious 'Darklayer GUARD' and 'VectorN Detection' . Fully agree on 'Patch My PC' (+ SUMo).
X-Ploit Resilience for example is just a software updater. Of course having up-to-date software is important for a secure PC, but it doesn't do anything else, no exploit migitations or not even blocking new processes when it is likely an exploit, for example Word or PDF reader launching a new process. On top of that the list of software that it checks for available updates is very limited and overwrites foreign languages versions with the english version. Other features with fancy names are just url filters and traffic scanners and their new 'next-gen' AV engine is just Avira.(Not saying Avira is bad, but it is not doing something revolutionary that other AV vendors don't. Also beware of vendors using 3rd party engines, a lot of times that means the dev team doesn't have the knowledge themselves and it's just an easy way to make a product and sell it.(Of course this is a generalization, there are good products with 3rd party engines out there, most well know example is Emsisoft.))
Regarding their updater for CCleaner. This is their claim https://heimdalsecurity.com/blog/security-alert-ccleaner-spread-malware/ "As soon as the news about the CCleaner backdoor, we conducted a thorough analysis on the patch delivered by Heimdal PRO, Heimdal FREE and Heimdal CORP on August 16 (for v5.33). The way Heimdal delivers the patch does not also involve executing any code. Therefore the backdoor is never opened. In the case of the CCleaner patch, no malicious connections were made."
That sounds like a bunch **** How do you update CCleaner without running the updater? Swap some files from the software folder with new ones that you've gotten beforehand? Right
I have no words, Heimdal really thinks that their customers are stupid. Even if the patch does not execute any code (doesnt make sense), Floxif malware was embedded in the CCleaner executable itself, so when the user ran the application (not the installer) he would be infected.
Hope they bring out an over complex webroot type diagram to try and explain how they managed to install a clean version of the infected CCleaner update. They deserve all the flac that they get making these ludicrus claims. Regards Eck
OK thanks, I always had a feeling that it was more hype, and this confirms it. I'm looking for more advanced solutions.
Ghacks Deals: Heimdal PRO Anti-malware: Lifetime Subscription (91% off) October 11, 2018 https://www.ghacks.net/2018/10/11/g...ro-anti-malware-lifetime-subscription-91-off/
Thanks mood! Mmmmh, a hundred years? I won't be here anyway and who knows maybe even computers won't exist...
Interesting that Heimdal PRO is still being sold? Which is equivalent to 'Thor Home' in their new product range ...
I'm really confused with what's on offer at Ghacks. I can only see Thor Foresight, Vigilance or Premium. So, what's Ghacks offering?
Can't be certain but old Heimdal PRO was converted to Thor Home, which includes Foresight (i.e. old Heimdal PRO features) but not Vigilance - which is the Avira AV engine, I understand - which is only included with Premium.
Thanks Paul. I think I'll give this a miss otherwise I'll end up with yet another reg code to add to my unused pile!
I noticed it had been a while since I'd had any dubious websites blocked by Heimdal Pro, so I clicked on the Notification Area icon and was shocked to see that Heimdal Pro, for which I had bought a "lifetime" license two months ago, had been turned into Thor Free which has fewer active features.
It should have updated to Thor Home, with the same features. Contact support at heimdalsecurity.com. They should be able to sort you out, at least tomorrow.
