Huge problem with unwanted Windows 10 download

I believe that 1 year mark will be extended and these Window 10 updates will continue. It looks like MS is on a mission, that's to get everyone to upgrade to Win 10 if the member likes it or not.

PS did you notice that even nod32 ,installs a program upgrade.exe , ESET Windows 10 Update in the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\AV\ the version of av ,found out today using autoruns , on a w7 and on a w8.1 machine

Yes. The list is correct. You have to look through it and select the ones that apply specifically to your version of Windows. The OP did not sort the list by Windows version.

 

Some of those KBs are for Windows 10 upgrade while others are for Telemetry. The OP did not sort the KBs required for W10 upgrade and Telemetry. One has to sort through the list.

On W8.1 just removing the W10 upgrade KBs does not work; all the Telemetry KBs must be removed as well. I have included a screen shot of the KBs I have blocked from installing. NOTE: A few of them are not W10\Telemetry related. For example, one is for the correct display of the EU currency for Estonia. The Security Update is to prevent a Sandboxie breakage (I will be restoring that one because Invincea fixed it). You have to sort through the list.

I've now got the shield icon on Win7 Shut down button but restarting and shutting down doesn't remove it. Windows Update History shows (Failed) too.

I suppose you mean the setup files for the Windows 10 upgrade, in C:\$Windows.~BT?
Or did you mean one of previously removed and hidden updates, or something else?

Yep, definitely a sign you got the setup files for the Windows 10 upgrade, and the push system active.
You can stop the recurring mentioning in Windows Update History by changing Windows Update setting "Install updates automatically" to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".
Cleaning up the setup files for the Windows 10 upgrade, and preventing it from coming back is another story, as you know.

What exactly have you done before?
Did you only get rid of the setup files for the Windows 10 upgrade in C:\$Windows.~BT, or did you do what geekatlarge mentioned on August 25, or did you do something else?
I noticed that on August 27 you mentioned you never had KB3035583 in the first place.

Great job with this thread and contacting The Inquirer, that got things moving. Since then, multiple websites picked up on the news. Although Microsoft's response is very unimpressive. Highly annoying how Microsoft makes it an art to tell as little as possible.
Myself, I started a similar thread on August 3, at he Dutch Security.NL. I contacted Microsoft, and I contacted several Dutch IT-websites and some news media, but the case was only picked up by one website, GratisSoftware.nl. That site's administrator also contacted Microsoft, but it wasn't until The Inquirer's article that things got moving. Well, not so much Microsoft moving, but at least multiple websites picked up on the news. Once again, great job, geekatlarge!

Yes, that is correct. Win10 setup files downloaded for a second time.

I have done that now. Windows Update still shows (Failed) and I still have the shield on Shut down button.

I had removed the C:\$Windows.~BT before. This time I removed the folder and removed two Windows Updates mention here that I found on my machine.

 

The records in Windows Update History that are already there won't go away, but there should be no new ones over the next days.
The shield on Shut down button is strange. Have you rebooted yet? With "Install updates automatically" changed to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" the shield on Shut down button should go away. Although I could imagine that it is there until the C:\$Windows.~BT push download is complete.

Ah, OK, I understand.
Only removing the C:\$Windows.~BT folder doesn't suffice, as long as the push mechanism is still active.
I don't know whether removing the folder and the mentioned updates is sufficient.
Over at Security.NL we also try to find out which is or are the determining factor(s). As there are so many factors to consider, it is very hard to find out. Same on many fora.
If only Microsoft would be so kind to just tell us what are the determining factors in the push download mechanism. But Microsoft would not be so kind, of course.

This is the (Failed) I am referring to and quite possibly why I still have the shield.

If only Microsoft would stop the Win10 push. If only MS would give us an update that would disable the Win10 download.

 

And when you click "View update history", you'll see mentioned "Update to Window 10", Status: "Failed".
With new updates that will be succeeded with the usual Windows Update info.

If I am not mistaken, the Group Policy fix can do that.
For that you need KB3050265 or KB3065987 for Windows 7, or KB3050267 or KB3065988 for Windows 8.1.
How to apply that Group Policy fix, you can find here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351, under "Group Policy".
However, if you don't have a Windows Pro edition, but a Home edition, there is no Group Policy. In that case you can manually edit the registry, as mentioned:

But an update (or Fix it) to stop the upgrade push nastiness in an easier way, that would be better, of course. (Well, that is if you trust Microsoft's updates or Fix its.)
