The question was posed why so many Rollback threads when normally other products are discussed in one thread. The policy has been only one product in a category, will have a multi thread support forum. Other products discussions have permitted vendors to support a product, but it has been confined to one thread.

We therefore would like to start confining Rollback discussions to one thread, this one. As the other threads pop up they will be directed here, and those threads closed.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Pete

    Yesnoo asked...

"Windows Updates released for the month.
Is it compatible with Rollback Home free?
    No info on Rollback forum."

Any info posted under the HDS UPDATE Thread is applicable to both RB HOME and RB Pro.

If there's no information as far as current updates are concerned, you should ask for the status in the above Forum.

I can tell you that the update that was sent out was an optional update, meaning that it is mainly updating drivers and other minor items. So in most cases it is not going to affect the MBR/GPT partition and compromise our software; so that's partially why we don't test these ones. These are also specific to your PC generally, and not widespread too amongst all computers, so it's tough for us to test them on our machines first as it's more likely geared towards a configuration that we don't have.

I appreciate people going to our forum to check (+1 forum) but it's not one we're going to test, and communicate on. I do think that there should be a write up explaining this; but for now know that it's something that in its nature shouldn't be an issue. If something does go wrong, remember that you can always submit a ticket. I don't like telling people 'Just try it and see what happens' but the likelihood of an optional update compromising the program is pretty darn low.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

Kurtis, while I appreciate what you are saying, no feedback from HDS is not the answer. Users see there are updates and even if they are following your official update thread, there's no communication from HDS. They don't know whether that means the testing is complete and there are no issues OR the testing is not yet complete and there may be issues... they're left hanging.

I might suggest that whoever is doing this work over at HDS give your users the courtesy of a simple ALL CLEAR as soon after each Patch Tuesday as HDS knows there's nothing to be concerned about (it matters not about ESSENTIAL vs OPTIONAL). That way users can expect something monthly concerning updates and the HDS products.

    Hey Froggie,

I totally get what you're saying and I agree. I'm contemplating writing up something that will address this. It's not that the update is harmless, it's that you guys are left wondering if you'll be in the know.

I'll talk to fellow staff members and look into this.

    Cheers,

    UPDATE:

You guys should read the HDS forum a bit more ;)

    Sam:

"We are still very much keeping up with Windows updates and testing them out. The only difference being that we only test recommended/essential updates, and not optional Windows updates. Optional is a bit too difficult to check on, as each PC will be given different optional updates depending on drivers, hardware config, etc.

With essential Windows updates, we are still following and will provide info. when available."

I certainly hope HDS fixes this soon. We could be deferring installing an update that fixes a zero day issue. yes?

I did read the Forum. It wasn't that the work was or wasn't going on... it's the lack of communication that has users puzzled. Sam's answer came in June, way after the May updates (and June Patch Tuesday) had occurred and nobody knew.

That's what led to my suggestion... a simple ALL CLEAR each month after Patch Tuesday. An explanation about ESSENTIAL vs OPTIONAL is good for people to know but not a reason not to communicate.

Absolutely! it's Patch Tuesday that directly leads to what's known as "Exploit Wednesday." That's when bad guys see exactly what security exploits MicroSloth has patched/fixed and immediately design the exploit to go after unpatched systems. Usually within a day or so a new exploit is seen in the wild that directly addresses what M$ has fixed... they're handed a way into your system free on Patch Tuesdays.

I could use some clarification on this Windows Updates topic:

Under Win7 64-bit there were 5 important updates yesterday from M$. When Kurtis states that this month there were only optional updates, this must apply to Win8.1.

Or are you saying that under Win7 even with a UEFI / GPT system Windows updates can never damage a Rollback RX protected system so Win7 users simply need not care?

    Cheers

Mab, yesterday's updates, I don't believe, have even been dealt with as far as the June approval cycle... hopefully we're hear something soon concerning those.

I believe it was the May grouping that was only OPTIONAL. And I believe, to date, only W8 updates have been a problem for HDS (starting with W8.1's update to Update #1).

I'm sure Kurtis will be better able to answer this question...

If it's an optional update then it should be fine, if it's an important one Sam will give the go ahead (if he hasn't please kindly ask if it's ok to go)

That's good to hear you got the word from Sam. If you don't see an important update, you can always ask. Sam monitors that forum like a hawk and generally responds pretty quickly

I have been using macrium with the boot menu option. I would like to try Rollback RX. Would there be any conflicts if they both had the boot menu options active?

Greetings JJ! Answered this question HERE in the RBrx Forum.

But understand, you won't be able to use Macrium Reflect LIVE image restoration successfully with Rollback RX installed on your system.

The new RAPiD DATA RESTORE feature of Macrium v6 is quite quick and suffices very well for me as a snapshot solution... unless you need to revert to a snapshot in seconds rather than a minute or so.

Pls see this POST's ATTACHMENT (Item #7) for more info on LIVE imaging issues with a Rollback RX system.

Hi Kurtis! With the official public release of Windows 10 scheduled for July 29th of this year, will HDS have a version in place at that time which will play well with the official release? Thanks in advance.

    Hello Froggie!

No, the thing is, we need time to work with the final build a bit more. We're hoping to have it ready not too long after Win10 releases. I think we may be doing beta testing with Jira for that, so if you're wanting to help us test that, I'll be sure to let you know.

In the interim, please don't install older versions/builds of our software on Windows 10 (final or test build). We've tested it internally and have found there to be near-catastrophic stability issues.

Not to sound like the harbinger of doom, but it's for the best. Drive Cloner V6 is nearing release (!!!) and then I'm fairly certain V11 of RollBack, Drive Vaccine, and Reboot Restore is next in terms of our development projects.

PB1, as Keatah says, that's the only way to handle it. But the important things to remeber are...

    1. You lose your snapshots
    2. If you unInstall to your CURRENT SYSTEM STATE, you must reBOOT your system before TRIM will operate once again.

From here on you can perform whatever Windows type maintenance you'd like (including TRIMming your SSD) then reInstall Rollback and contimue on.

The need to uninstall Rx from time to time in order to maintain a PC is not new. When I was an Rx (Rx version 7 to 9) user I would uninstall the program every few months so I could do PC house cleaning (defrag the drive etc as well as image the drive without Rx). No program is perfect and so some compromise is often required if you want to (safely?) use the program. This need to periodically uninstall Rx is simply one of those compromises.

Uninstalling RBRX to properly "trim" a system every month is totally inadequate. And would be a waste of time. In fact I would argue detrimental. All the writes necessary to rebuild/restore the system would outweigh the one-time issuance. Be aware that the OS issues TRIM much more often than once a month.

I agree with you BUT, if you want to use Rx with SSDs then thats what you would have to do. Personally I do not get why folks would use Rx when there is a much less dangerous solution (albeit a minute slower for restores) in the form of Macrium Reflect V6. But each to their own.

Running trim once a month is pretty much useless. It might fill some psychological gap though.
