LibreOffice 4.4 Fresh Branch released today: Release Notes: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/ New Features: http://www.libreoffice.org/discover/new-features/ Download: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/
To clarify, I'm not an "advanced user" of Office software, so perhaps my needs are different. But can you give some more info, what do you miss in WPS Office, and what's so cool about LibreOffice?
Hi Rasheed, I am definitively not an advanced user of Office software. I only use Office programs for simple stuff. I know WPS is a very small installation compared to Libre. But I give you three reasons why I prefer Libre over WPS. 1. WPS attempts to connect a lot to the internet, 2. WPS comes with bundled software, when I tested it (Shadow mode), even though I was very careful and opted out, I found the folder for one of the programs that they bundle in Program files and 3. I know I told you this one before, I feel Libre works better with SBIE than WPS. I am using the portable version in W7. On number 3, I did use the program for a few months when it was called Kingston and as I told you before, it was tough for me to get it working right with SBIE. Bo
This= LibreOffice releases more [security] updates , i.e. = ---------------------- LibreOffice Release Plan: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan Release Plan 4.4: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/4.4 --------------------- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_office_suites
Yes, you told me about this, these things are luckily no deal breakers for me. OK, I see. But that is not what I personally would call "more quality".
A program which is developing continuously and each new release contains security updates as well as a number of other fixes and improvements, yes that means "quality", imho.
LibreOfice is also open-source, a big plus if you have a mindset of transparency. And it is available on Linux too.
I can understand, but quality to me means performance and features. I'm not that worried about security updates and regular development, especially when it comes to Office software.
LibreOffice 4.3.6 “Still” released today http://blog.documentfoundation.org/2015/02/20/the-document-foundation-announces-libreoffice-4-3-6/ Release Notes: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/#still
It is pre-installed in most Linux distros apparently. My point was it is cross platform, so syncing documents shouldn't be much of a problem.
I read all the thread, especially rasheed187 's posts. I agree with his outlook, but I don't like the potential bundle of wps; so, some other alternative ?
The "Grail" for the alternative office suites is compatibility with Microsoft Office, ie being able to properly display documents created with MS Office and vice versa. For a great many people compatibility has to be close to perfect to make an alternative suite a viable choice, and unfortunately many of the suites don't get close enough. A recent review states that LibreOffice has made a big advance in this regard with the 4.4 release. LibreOffice 4.4 review – Finally, it rocks http://netrunner-mag.com/libreoffice-4-4-review-finally-it-rocks/ On the other hand for those who don't need perfect MS Office compatibility many of the suites, such as OpenOffice, are fine. Now, if we could just get everyone to use the Open Document format (ODF) the compatibility problem would go away https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument
Thank you ! Luckily, for my work I don't need perfect MS Office compatibility. My need, about Office's suites, is a software light no adware or crapware. I'd like WPS, but bo elam's post is discouraging.
Hi Everyone The problem with LibreOffice is that it is all about big brush statements and not detail. What do I mean by this? Well, MailMerge is one example. It is the worst executed piece of software ever. I am not an MS Office fan but it is light years ahead of LibreOffice in that respect and that is before one talks about "suppressing blank lines". Even the freebies like WPS Office are far superior. Not impressed. Lighter, simpler, and easy, needs to be the maxim. Terry
